Site Diary: Trench 7

Third week

We have now planned the soil of Trench 7 exposed by deturfing and removal of the peaty soil. Talya has been 'promoted in the field' as a new supervisor to keep an eye on excavation of the trench.

Artifacts discovered during initial cleaning of the soil at this level comprise badly abraded pottery sherds, burnt stones and flakes of flint and chert, further supporting the idea that the rectangular field was manured. These are at a higher level than the 10 well-preserved sherds found within the test pit and may be the first indications that there were different phases of activity in this area. We will have more to say next week as excavation continues.

A veritable 'wall of trowels' completing initial cleaning on Trench 7.
