Site Diary: Trench 7

Fifth week

Final stages of excavation

We have removed the final spits of mineralised soil to reveal the yellow sandy subsoils lying below. Within this mineralised soil artefacts have continued to be found, though in slightly lower frequencies the further down we move. A further two glass beads have been recovered, as well as a clay toggle or bead about 2cm in diameter, further sherds of pottery and a firecracked quartz pebble used as a polishing tool.

We are now beginning to identify features cut into the yellow subsoil and it will only once we have excavated these that we will begin detailed interpretation of the nature of prehistoric activities that have resulted in the multitude of artefactual finds.
