Site Diary: Trench 5

Second week

We are currently digging the bank itself which comprises earth and small stones. The presence of the stones implies that the bank could not have simply formed from the trapping of windblown soil against a hedge or fence, but was deliberately built. There are two likely methods for how the bank was constructed.

Turves may have been cut from the surrounding ground and piled on top of each other or a linear ditch may have been dug and the soil from it dumped along one side. Again, more should be revealed as we continue digging.
