Site Diary: Trench 5

Third week

We have dug a narrow sondage (slit trench) across the earthen bank to more quickly gain an idea of how the bank was constructed and what we can expect from further excavation within the trench. This currently suggests that there were no ditches either side of the bank, implying that it was built from turves. When we clean the sides of the sondage we should be able to tell whether any evidence for the building up of the bank with individual turves has survived podsolisation of the soils.

Trench 5 with the narrow sondage.

A view of the section from the sondage - its uniform appearance suggesting the absence of banks and ditches.
